Otero Court System & Jurisdictions

Otero County is part of the Twelfth Judicial District of New Mexico, which also serves Lincoln County. Within the county, there are two main courts — the District Court and the Magistrate Court, both located in Alamogordo.

District Court

The District Court handles the widest range of cases:

  • Criminal cases — felonies, including cases with life imprisonment sentences
  • Civil lawsuits with no monetary limit
  • Family cases — divorce, custody, child support (relevant forms available on the Twelfth District's website)
  • Probate cases — will approvals, executor appointments
  • Appeals from the Magistrate Court

This is a court of general jurisdiction. If you are unsure where to file a lawsuit, start here.

Magistrate Court

The Magistrate Court deals with less complex cases:

  • Misdemeanors
  • Traffic violations
  • Small claims — up to $10,000
  • Civil cases up to $10,000
  • Preliminary hearings in criminal cases
  • Arrest and search warrants

There is no separate traffic court in the county — such cases are handled by the Magistrate Court. The Probate Court operates at the county level and handles uncomplicated, uncontested probate cases.

Otero Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

The hearing schedule is published on the Twelfth Judicial District's website and covers the current day plus the next six days.

Some hearings are conducted via Google Meet — this is indicated in the respective schedule line. If you need to find a specific case by number or party name, it is more convenient to use the NM Case Lookup system, where you can see all scheduled events for the case.

The schedule is updated daily. For archival data or to check the status of a case, contact the court clerk's office.

You can obtain a copy of a court document in three ways: online, in person, or by mail. The type of copy — regular or certified — depends on the purpose of use.

Online

  1. Go to the Odyssey Public Access portal or re:Search®NM
  2. Select "Otero County District Court" or "Otero County Magistrate Court" from the list
  3. Find the case by number, party name, or date
  4. Review the available documents — some can be downloaded for free

Note: Information from the online portal is not an official court record. For legal purposes, a certified copy is usually required.

In Person

Visit the court clerk's office in Alamogordo. The clerk will issue a regular or certified copy on-site. Bring the case number with you — it will speed up the search.

Send a written request specifying the case number, party names, and document type. Include payment (check or money order payable to District Court Clerk). Access Restrictions
